Air Cleaners in the Home

Air filters come in a variety of types, including standard air filters, HEPA filters, electrostatic filters, and ion generators (note that the last method is not actually an air filter but a mechanism to "charge" particulate matter in the air, causing them to adhere to fixed objects in the room, including walls and floors).  All of these devices may help symptoms (excluding dust mite allergy).

Recommendation: Consider an air cleaner if symptoms are inadequately controlled, and especially if allergic to mold, animal substances, or if someone smokes in the house.  Note that not all of these devices are created equal.  Only HEPA filters can reliably capture the finest airborne matter.  HEPA filters can be directly connected to the duct system of a home air circulation system.  The cost is $175 - 200, not including installation.  An alternative method would be a HEPA room air filter, preferably used in the bedroom.   Bio-Tech Systems offers the Enviracaire EV25 which filters up to 250 cubic feet per minute and costs $195.  Enviracaire EV35 is a larger model and filters up to 325 cubic feet per minute.  Its cost is $215.  If you wish to filter a larger area with a portable unit, NSA offers a model which will filter up to 3000 cubic feet at a cost of $450.  It is important to realize that a HEPA room-size filter does not require any special adaptation and can actually filter out smaller particles than the duct installation method.

As mentioned, mite control is not greatly affected by these devices.  Look at the link to Mite Allergy for further information on this subject.
