Cataplexy

Cataplexy occurs when an individual dramatically loses muscle control, or develops slight weakness, and may even fall to the ground.  These episodes are distinct from sleep attacks, and the patient is typically aware of everything that occurs.  These episodes can be mistaken for fainting.  Mild involvement may include only slight limb weakness, slurred speech, or a drooping facial expression.  Cataplexy episodes usually last only a few seconds, but can last up to thirty minutes on rare occasions.
